See How We Put MLK’s #LegacyofService in Action

The Mission Continues MLK Day of Service

Putting Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy of service into action this past weekend, volunteers with The Mission Continues accomplished large-scale service projects in local communities. In 34 service events across the country we drew 1,902 volunteers, totaling 9,332 hours of service — and captured the event in this Impact Report.

The Mission Continues’ platoon operations are our way of bringing about the unity Dr. King envisioned for the country. The National Day of Service in his honor was our opportunity to reiterate our commitment to diverse and underserved communities, and to show our fellow citizens the power of veterans as unifiers as they tackle community challenges.

If we collectively broaden our outlook and use our diversity as a resource to implement change, then together, city by city, block by block, veteran by veteran, we can come together and create a better tomorrow.

While our service projects took place in dozens of cities, eight of them in particular stood out to embody Dr.King’s values: Equality, Faith, Nonviolence, Education, Love, Leadership, Selflessness, and Hope.

Our Values in Action: Living up to Dr. King’s #LegacyofService

January 5, 2018

During the weekend of MLK Day, we’re activating our veterans and civilian allies to bring Dr. King’s core values to life. This is your chance to translate shared values into positive action and make a difference!

The aim of these #LegacyofService projects is to get folks of all backgrounds, civilians and veteran alike, to come together to continue what Dr. King and the Civil Rights Movement did for our country: make it a better, stronger, more equal place.

The Unexpected Revelations of an Army Spouse

November 17, 2017
By Emily Ferstle Angus, City Impact Manager

Though my tenure as City Impact Manager at The Mission Continues began prior to marrying my husband, an Army reservist, you may be able to imagine that since working here, I’ve dragged him into the mix and he’s become very involved.

Truly, volunteering is the type of work he would do on his own anyway, even if his wife wasn’t asking him to help out her volunteers on a regular basis. He really seems to enjoy the physical nature of the mission and learning about different neighborhoods and their challenges around the city.

He’s one of those guys who is reluctant to volunteer the information that he is a veteran. For someone who identifies his greatest abilities and talents with his job in the Army, this always has been a quandary to me. He is proud to serve, and proud of his reasons why, but he is conservative with that information, reserving it only for his inner circle.

At the Detroit 2nd Platoon Veterans Day project this past weekend, we had a lot of fun and got a lot of work accomplished, but what I will share with you now is the revelation I had as an Army spouse, not as a staff member.

Veterans Day: Miami Platoon Working on Hurricane Irma Recovery

November 15, 2017

In honor of Veterans Day, Miami’s 1st Service Platoon returned to Everglades National Park, which sustained damage during Hurricane Irma. While there was much to be done, they focused their efforts where it was needed most.

The park’s 3-in-1 Trail had been rendered unusable due to downed trees and other debris. This half-mile trail is most popular among school groups because it takes them through three different habitats that can be found in the

Jon Stewart on the Meaning of Service and Sacrifice

November 10, 2017

Jon Stewart volunteers with The Mission Continues

After a day of serving alongside almost a hundred volunteers with The Mission Continues at Ellis Island, Jon Stewart took a minute to reflect on the meaning of service and sacrifice in our country, for veterans and civilians alike. It felt appropriate at the time (for our 9/11 Day of Service project) and feels appropriate to reflect now that Veterans Day is upon us.

Boeing and The Mission Continues Empower Veterans to Soar

November 3, 2017

The morning of September 9th, at East Capitol Urban Farm in Washington D.C. was EJ Delpero’s time to shine. He had prepared for this moment for over a year.

During EJ’s six-month fellowship with The Mission Continues and subsequent tenure as a service platoon leader, he was able to translate his military leadership skills into civilian contexts.

Now as a seasoned volunteer for The Mission Continues, he and his teammates stepped up to the plate this fall when they were tasked with leading the planning and execution for this year’s 9/11 Day of Service.

In New York, Veterans Serve at Ellis Island

September 14, 2017

Veterans with The Mission Continues serving at Ellis Island in honor of 9/11

People say that in the days that followed, an overwhelming sense of appreciation and love emanated throughout New York. Last Saturday, for the 16th anniversary of 9/11, we brought that feeling to Ellis Island, where we helped preserve a piece of our nation’s history for future generations.

Ellis Island teaches many of us about our heritage — how many of our ancestors came to this country, and what they overcame to make a better life for themselves and their children. For many, it is an enduring symbol of the American Dream and acceptance.

For us, it’s a way of connecting with past and future generations of immigrants who have helped build the country we fought to defend.
